What Is Importing?

Importing is the process of purchasing goods or materials from another country and bringing them into your own country for personal use, resale, or further production.

For example, a Thai business may import machinery from China, cosmetics from South Korea, or food ingredients from Japan. These activities are considered imports.

Importing involves more than simply ordering products. It also includes international transportation, trade documentation, customs clearance, import duties, and taxes.

Before importing, businesses should check:

  • Whether the product is allowed to enter Thailand
  • Whether an import licence or certification is required
  • The applicable import duty and value-added tax
  • The total cost of shipping and related expenses

Understanding the complete import process and calculating the landed cost in advance can help reduce risks and avoid unexpected expenses.
